Greetings again from downtown St. Paul. Game 3 and the third-place game of the North Star College Cup between Minnesota State and St. Cloud State.
Stephon Williams is in goal for the Mavericks. Zach Stepan and Teddy Blueger are back in the lineup.
Out (of those who played last night) are Huntebrinker, Casey Nelson and Josh Nelson. ... Flanagan is in on D, and Blake Thompson moved from F to D.
Lee, check the FSN website. That's where it would be, if anywhere. Otherwise, it is being broadcast on FSN (Fox Sports North)
Interestingly, the Mavs' forward lines are a bit different than last week against Ferris. Stepan is on the top line, and Gervais goes to the second line.
Not sure if soft is the right term. More of a mistake. Fumbled the puck. Probably a fraction of a second before the whistle would have blown the play dead.
As for how he played, it was up and down. The first goal was a long shot from the blue line by the wall. I didn't see it on the replay but was told the puck may have hit a defenseman's leg and changed direction. He made some good saves, too.
Mavs gave up too many shots, too, and took too many penalties, including one in OT. Duluth had 35 shots.
They dropped to 22nd, I believe, in the PWR. Not good. A win today would be huge. Otherwise, they'll have to go on quite a run in the WCHA the rest of the way and win the league tourney.
Having said that, a lot can happen over the final 6-7 weeks of the regular season and first round of the playoffs.
MSU starters: Williams, Stern, Palmquist, Grant, Margonari, McInnis
SCSU starters: Faragher, Gravel, Daly, Tedesco, Thorson, Bertsch
St. Cloud State is ranked fifth in both national polls, eighth in the Pairwise
Good pressure so far by the Mavericks. Better start than yesterday,
Lehrke partially fans on an open shot in the slot after a good effort by Stepan. Really good scoring chance there.
First media timeout with 14:57 left in the period. Mavs outshooting St. Cloud 4-1
It's possible. We certainly know what he's capable of. As for the rest of the year, who knows? If one of them gets/stays hot, that's who will go. I'm sure they'd like to figure that out sooner than later.
Lots of pucks going off skates and defenders. Nothing clean. A lot like yesterday in that respect.
Faragher shows a quick glove on a chance by Palmquist sneaking down low. Nice save.
LaFontaine with a goal. Gets Faragher cheating for a possible pass to Blueger and he slides it in short side.
15 goals now for LaFontaine
Williams has to dive back to glove a puck that took a crazy carom off the glass. Morley missed the shot wide. Heads-up play by Williams.
Williams did get a piece of the initial shot
4:38 left in the period. Shots are 9-4 for MSU. Survived a nice push by the Huskies on the last shift.
Huskies score on a 2-on-1 that turned into a 3-on-1 with Brodzinski finishing. Terrible turnover by Blueger started the play at the other end. Got too cute with the puck.
It's close, but I think Prochno avoided contact with Williams. It's a goal.
Penalty coming on St. Cloud. High stick.
Jutzi exits the ice slowly after blocking a shot. Looks like he's headed to the locker room with the team doc
Mavs finally get a shot on goal on the PP with 20 seconds left. LaFontaine. 1 minute left in the period
Second period is underway.
Give Gervais an assist on LaFontaine's first-period goal.
Faragher saves a LaFontaine open shot. Not a breakaway per se ... then more MSU pressure ends with a Gervais rebound goal.
