Greetings again from the shores of Lake Bemidji. The teams are warming up right now.
Cole Huggins will get his first career start in goal for the Mavericks. Not sure if this is a direct reflection on Williams' performance last night. He had some good moments and some not-so-good ones ...
But you probably need to find out early in the season if Huggins can play or not.
Sophomore D Nick Buchanan will make his season debut. He played in 24 games last season. Mat Knoll is out, but there is some other switching on MSU forward lines and D groupings. Zach Palmquist is paired with Buchanan, and Casey Nelson is with Stern ...
Up front the fourth line is the same as are the centers and RWs on lines 1-3. But the LWs are different. Stepan is on the top line, Grant is on the second line, and Margonari's on the third.
I'll be curious to see what the power play looks like, too.
Meanwhile, and not surprisingly, no changes for Bemidji State tonight.
Looks like fewer people here at the start of the game than there was last night. Fewer students, for sure.
MSU starters: Huggins, Jutzi, Foguth, Stepan, Blueger, McInnis
Gaede and Grant with assists
First decent shot on Huggins. He bobbles it a bit, which causes a little scrum. Maybe some nerves there.
Scoreboard says shots are 3-1 for BSU
Definitely some energy for Mavs. But there was more in the 1st period last night, I'd say.
But they got a goal tonight, so all in all better so far.
Best scoring chance for MSU since the goal was a little turnaround shot near the right post by LaFontaine. Don't think Walsh saw it, but LaFontaine needed to get it in the corner, instead put it in the goalie's chest.
I think Stepan's going to be a heck of a player but needs to get stronger.
Another Bemidji penalty. Tripping. This is what MSU did in the first last night: control play and draw penalties. Gotta finish chances though.
Same group as last time except Gervais instead of Stepan, who just finished a shift.
Second unit is McInnis, Blueger, LaFontaine, Jutzi, C. Nelson
Mavs appeared to score but a late whistle from the ref who thought Walsh had frozen the puck earlier.
If the scoreboard is right, MSU had four shots on goal during the PP. It's 7-3 now.
Huggins gets aggressive and makes a nice save against Hartmann
3 minutes left in the period, still 1-0 Mavericks
Great chance for Bemidji misses wide. Crowd oohs and aahs
Another BSU penalty coming up
1:39 left in the period. MSU on the PP. Good chance
1 minute left in the period
Mavs power play weak to start this time around but gaining momentum late. LaFontaine and Jutzi with good chances
That's the end of the period. MSU will have 21 seconds left on the PP to start the second.
It certainly is quieter around here without that four-year-long debate!
And we're underway in the second.
Mavs recover quickly after a scary turnover in their own end.
Here comes another MSU PP. Fans don't like it (4-0 BSU penalties to MSU penalties) but this trip had to be called.
And the PP ends just as quickly as Margonari gets called for tripping, preventing a short-handed rush
4x4 for 1:53 ... Not sure Margonari had to do that. Gotta move your feet there
Blueger pretty good on the faceoff right now. Three wins in a row there
